I was looking up the word synergy as a potential name for a painting when I first came across the word; it read \"an imaginary being inhabiting the air.\" That was it! I held onto that painting for years unwilling to part with it. I was eventually asked to paint a mural, based on the original, in a swimming pool by a client who really wanted to buy the painting. What a treat to take a small painting and make it the size of a swimming pool! Plus the win win is that I met my husband on that project as he was the pool builder. The textile as you see it is from one of the painted versions of the pool mural. It comes from the wing of a skeletal creature flying against a midnight sky. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eYears later we ended up redoing the mural in Murano glass mosaic. It was a bit of a family project. At one point my husband, our nephew, and I were all working together in the pool. These were two very large flower arrangements done in trompe l'oeil stone urns, which were painted by Roger. Holly and I pulled a lot of our reference from the French botanical artist, Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The original pieces were multi-colored but I changed direction on the digital design. I wanted the textiles to have that 40s era quality. It's often my touchstone when working on florals. The piece is named for one of my very first models from the Studio2eleven Textile Company. The itinerary included Krakow to see one of my bucket list paintings. Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine had been in storage for over a decade because of renovations. Without good information on whether or not it would be on display, we hit the road. To our delight we found that it was featured in a different location with its own exhibit! One of our stops was the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow; which was Izabela Czartoryski's palace. This is the typical home of the da Vinci. She was an amazing collector. The museum includes her residence along with a gallery of highlighted pieces. Her Raphael painting was never recovered from the Nazis who stole it in WWII (along with the aforementioned da Vinci and a Rembrandt, both recovered and returned by the Monuments Men). I snapped just a few photos of what seemed like hand-painted leather wall coverings done in individual squares. I used the photos as a starting point for two textile designs. I sampled it from this beautiful photo from her wedding day at Linn Ranch in the Tetons. There were gorgeous flowers on all the tables and this particularly stunning variegated sunflower was the center piece of her bouquet. All of the flowers were picked locally for the wedding with many of us participating in making the arrangements. In the photo she is holding her bouquet wrapped around the trunk of an aspen tree (which you see in the light colored space in the center of the pattern). I desaturated, then tinted the file to a green\/gold color to get that vintage quality. My neighbors are very skilled gardeners. They have taken on an outdoor common area for our building for years. We all benefit from the delight of their dedication to a garden that flashes flowers continually for four or five months in the non-snowy season. In the Fall they cut back the leafy parts of the bulb plants and discard them for composting. One Spring I was out early in the morning and saw the pile, frosted and slightly snow covered. I took many photos. I ended up going back to them a few years later and creating the pattern Chezella. Some versions of Chezella are cut on an angle and when digitally stitched create a medallion effect. I have used this medallion for several custom duvet covers for clients in the original color file. Amping up the contrast in gray scale created the version you see here. Very retro! In a few minutes it very much clicked and I was set on a new path. \"99 Steps\" was one in a mini series of three pieces that worked in concert and were featured along with five other works in a show called \"Draw Me.\" I was traveling between Steamboat Springs and Jackson Hole that winter while working on the show. My husband and nephews fondly referred to our place in Jackson as 99 Steps as that was how many steps it took\u003cspan style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'San Francisco', 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003e to walk to the chairlift (lucky us!). The portability of graphite on paper was perfect for working on my show while also spending time with our family. The intermingling of skulls, vertebrae, snakes, and insects have been present in my art for decades placing my work squarely at the intersection of surrealism and nature. The three pieces from this mini series were created to conjure a nostalgia for historic etchings and the odd fantastical result of a type of interbreeding of species. All three have been adapted for digital textiles and have provided a good size library of designs. There were nine pieces in the show and three in this mini sub-series. My very first repeating design work was created from the three piece series as single edition prints and were included in the show. I took these very organic elements and made them into these quite elaborate symmetrical designs. As they originated from drawings by my own hand, there are variations from one side to the other. I love discovering these variations as I am working with them for textiles. In this piece I used bird skulls, feathers, leaves, and insect wings presenting them as a flower. The jaw bones referenced were gifted to me by a friend in New York City. They were presented to her as part of a traditional Italian lamb dish. I still have them. The painting is named for an enlisted man I met with his buddy both freshly on leave. They were heading home from Iraq for the holidays. I met them at the bar at Pour la France in terminal B at Denver Airport en route to Boise, Idaho. It turned out that one was a musician and one was an artist. I had my computer and they ended up looking at a lot of my work and loved it. I wanted to honor their service and their excitement to be heading home, but not by buying them another round (believe me everyone near by was already on that!). I was working on a series for a show and told them I would name paintings for both of them. Both paintings featured nests as a symbol of home. I went on to use the nest in several more pieces over the next few years always symbolic of home and family. This one is called \"Snatched; Renn's Nest.\" It found a home with a client of mine who also has pillows made from the textile, living on a sofa nearby where the piece hangs. The original pieces had a full range of color but when I translated them for textiles I wanted a more 40s style feel. With the floral layer of the textile I ended up going to gray scale, making it considerably lighter and reducing the contrast before adding in the pale yellow. As the wildlife in Galapagos is protected from human predators, many bird species have no fear of people making them very easy to capture in photos. I came back from that trip thinking I was a truly gifted photographer right up until I tried to take a photo of a bird back home! Nonetheless, I had fantastic reference photos that continue to give in the form of fine art and mural work. Even within the last few years I have gone back to those photos to create the raw umber and snow white feathers of the Nazca Booby bird in a pair of commissioned paintings. These same feathers have also appeared in many drawings over the last twenty years. The patterns Kate and Jillian are both cut from a painting I did of a bird for a show called Confluence. The piece was of a very much glamorized version of the Nazca Booby bird. It had a significantly longer swan like neck and exceptional tail feather plumage, almost peacock in length! I couldn't help but name the painting \"She's Had Work Done.\" The painting was sold to the wife of a board member of the WWF. Years later, I designed custom textiles for her from a sample of the tail feathers for a set of sheers. The very first textile I did for leggings for the Studio2eleven Textile Company was also created from this sample. The two pieces called \"Prima\" represent the first piece designed for Studio2eleven and the first piece designed for Defiance, both are from this painting. The itinerary included Krakow to see one of my bucket list paintings. Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine had been in storage for over a decade because of renovations. Without good information on whether or not it would be on display, we hit the road. To our delight we found that it was featured in a different location with its own exhibit! One of our stops was the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow; which was Izabela Czartoryski's palace. This is the typical home of the da Vinci. She was an amazing collector. The museum includes her residence along with a gallery of highlighted pieces. Her Raphael painting was never recovered from the Nazis who stole it in WWII (along with the aforementioned da Vinci and a Rembrandt, both recovered and returned by the Monuments Men). I snapped just a few photos of what seemed like hand-painted leather wall coverings done in individual squares. I used the photos as a starting point for two textile designs.
