RINGO
PRODUCT DETAILS
Textile Origin Story:
Ringo is a piece I did for the Draw Me show. There were four of these Beatles (I know it's cheeky). The full name of this piece is Ringo Dressed up in Sophia's Frock. The back of this notebook features another of the four bug pieces named No. 9 (homaging Revolution No. 9 but, additionally, it was the 9th work completed for the show). At some point about 20 years ago I had started thinking of the Grand Canyon as a metaphor for the White Album. I hiked into the Grand Canyon spending several nights there in 1999. There exists every variation of terrain that is replicated throughout the American West. There are even palm trees on the Colorado River at the very bottom! I think of the White Album in that way too. With its immense diversity it is a launching point for so much that came after for decades. My interest in surreal entomology lead me back to the band while working on this show when I conceived of doing four surreal beetle drawings. Most of the drawings from the show were sold but I ended up keeping Ringo. It's that one little gem. I think it is the best drawing I've ever done. Each of the Beatle drawings features different closure details (screws, grommets, stitching) and horns their horns are all mammalian. Ringo's horns resemble those of a male Impala. They are presented like Victorian insect drawings.
