Textile Origin Story:

This beetle IS named for the famous left-handed Beatle drummer, Richard Starkey. The full name of the original drawing is "Ringo Dressed up in Sophia's Frock." Over twenty years ago I was interviewed for a recurring piece called "Spotlight on Routt County" for the Steamboat Pilot. One of the questions was who would I invite for dinner and what would I cook? My guest list included Hieronymus Bosch, Liz Phair, and the iconic Ringo Starr! I just always had it in my head that he would be the funnest Beatle to hang out with. I did this piece for the Draw Me show and I believe it to be the most perfect drawings I have ever done. I still have it. It is the only piece I've done wherein I look at it and believe it is finished and I do look at it every day whenever I am in Steamboat. There were four beetle drawings in show (I know, that's cheeky and it was intentional). One of them was called "No. 9" and went to live in New York City. The other two were named after my nieces; "Lilia Luna" and "Jane in Her Finery." There was also a "Spinal Cracker" in the show and that piece became multiple textiles including Penelope, as in Penny Lane. I believe Ringo would approve of his namesake shoes. Oh! Almost forgot, I was going to cook spaghetti and meatballs, of course! And specifically noted that I would have Italian bread flown in from New Jersey.
