Textile Origin Story:

Igby is a little print that came from a very large painting. It was a collaborative piece I did with a fellow artist that was uncharacteristically abstract for both of us. It had parts that looked like twisted ancient roots. Parts of it maybe resembled dying orchids. Some parts looked like sea shells or human bones. And right smack in the middle it looked like a petrified human heart. I painted that heart; I obsessed over the painting's macabre focal. It's the only piece I ever painted in oil and the only piece I ever painted on linen. Once was enough for both of those things! I spent a lifetime developing my skill set around the fast drying medium of acrylic and I am not about to walk that back. The piece is provocative, dark, beautiful; working on it felt like combat at times. I hated having sticky oil paint on my hands. It made me claustrophobic. It is intense golds, ambers, and deep umber with zero negative space; it challenges. Against your will, you are always brought back to the center. For the textile, I desaturated the image of the painting bringing it close to gray scale. I laid two layers on top of one another, turning the top semi-transparent layer 90 degrees. It took on a massively different feeling creating a type of floral medallion; archival, traditional. It is decorative. I played with it constantly back when I had the Studio2eleven Textile Company. I made a series of chiffon scarves in different color palettes with beautiful borders. The textile is unrecognizable as a descendent of the original art. Maybe this whole taming process is a metaphor for the black sheep and its want for assimilation. Hmmmm... I'll chew on that.
