JACK
PRODUCT DETAILS
Textile Origin Story:
This is a piece I did called Jack, painted in 1996. There were several other paintings in this genre - they were all set up to look like traditional Renaissance botanical and entomology style studies. I really leaned into the detail to make these surreal pieces believable as real specimens. I remember sitting at a bar in Union Station in Washington, DC and showing a friend of a friend a slide of this piece through a view finder. He said, "what the hell is that?" I told him it was a Reticulated Jackalina and that it was now extinct. He replied that he thought it was very cool; he didn't realize he was looking at a painting. I also did a very surreal self portrait at this time - iris petals were painted in place of arms and the irises of the eyes were white, vacant; artist with no hands and no sight (must ponder on that). I always saw Jack as the counterpart to my self portrait. Early on I was motivated to sell them but a close encounter with a potential buyer left me queasy and made me realize that these should stay with me. Only one went out but to a dear friend so I still get to see it.
