Textile Origin Story:

It doesn't happen often but sometimes you end up doing a new piece of art that is a copy of a previous piece. In this case the pieces were more than twenty years apart! This is a drawing of the 1996 painting, First Kiss. When I did the painting I was living in DC and one of my roommates has remained a good friend ever since (we call each other sis and bro!). When he got married in 2018 I wanted to give him and his wife an original piece of art. I have always thought of First Kiss as a bonded couple, so First it would be! It is so tricky copying your own work while changing up mediums! Graphite is definitely less forgiving and there is the issue in a piece like this of keeping the paper outside of the image pristine and clean. In acrylic if you make a mistake you just paint over it. I really ended up loving its new life as a drawing and I believe they did too!
