Textile Origin Story:

Flora is the first of a three painting series that I did at the end of 1996. These pieces were to present as botanical and entomological pieces with the inspiration coming from this very important Victorian art form. I wanted to do these surreal pieces that had this dark feeling showcasing the madness that could ensue through the interbreeding of species - they actually feel very Bosch to me. Flora is at once reptilian, botanical, and ornithological but at quick glance shows like a single tulip. The two paintings that followed Flora were Jack and First Kiss. It is bonkers to try and paint a peacock feather and for some reason I never learn my lesson as I continue to revisit them! This was my first. A friend of mine once told me that an artist should always have the best collection of their own work. That caused me to pull these from further exhibitions. I thought that where ever my career may go, I wanted to hold onto these three early pieces.
