IZZY LAPIS

Textile Origin Story:
In 2017 we did a trip to Eastern Europe. The itinerary included Krakow to see one of my bucket list paintings. Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine had been in storage for over a decade because of renovations. Without good information on whether or not it would be on display, we hit the road. To our delight we found that it was featured in a different location with its own exhibit! One of our stops was the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow; which was Izabela Czartoryski's palace. This is the typical home of the da Vinci. She was an amazing collector. The museum includes her residence along with a gallery of highlighted pieces. Her Raphael painting was never recovered from the Nazis who stole it in WWII (along with the aforementioned da Vinci and a Rembrandt, both recovered and returned by the Monuments Men). I snapped just a few photos of what seemed like hand-painted leather wall coverings done in individual squares. I used the photos as a starting point for two textile designs. I had just a corner of the piece that became the textile Izzy named for the Czartoryski matriarch.
