FLANDERS FIELDS
PRODUCT DETAILS
Textile Origin Story:
Set against the background of my iconic Nesting textile, the garland comes from pieces dating as far back as 2002 spanning up to a piece finished this past June. I had this wild thought about the garland. I wanted to see if I would like it if I mixed elements from my drawings with my paintings. I love it. It's unlike any other Defiance textile I have designed. So for the garland, let's go chronologically! The oldest part of the garland are the sunflowers and the Lilies coming from a mural I painted with two other artists in 2002. It was a pair of urns with floral arrangements in a wine cellar for one of my interior design clients. Fast forward ten years to 2012; I was asked to participate in a group show of women artists in LA and opted to do drawings. The graphite elements in the garland come from those two pieces. Here we are now in 2026 - the rest of the elements are from a painting I did this summer. That would include the poppy for which the piece is named. "In Flanders Fields" is a wartime poem from World War I. This is the origin of the poppy as a symbol honoring fallen military. Here, but especially in the UK, small paper poppies are worn to honor the dead. I had it in my head that I wanted to paint the poppy over Memorial Day this year as a meditation and symbol of gratitude. I finished the piece in its entirety in June of this year.
