Textile Origin Story:
In my thirties, a fellow artist gave me some quick instruction on skills appropriate for drawing with great detail. In a few minutes it very much clicked and I was set on a new path. "99 Steps" was one in a mini series of three pieces that worked in concert and were featured along with five other works in a show called "Draw Me." I was traveling between Steamboat Springs and Jackson Hole that winter while working on the show. My husband and nephews fondly referred to our place in Jackson as 99 Steps as that was how many steps it took to walk to the chairlift (lucky us!). The portability of graphite on paper was perfect for working on my show while also spending time with our family. The intermingling of skulls, vertebrae, snakes, and insects have been present in my art for decades placing my work squarely at the intersection of surrealism and nature. The three pieces from this mini series were created to conjure a nostalgia for historic etchings and the odd fantastical result of a type of interbreeding of species. All three have been adapted for digital textiles and have provided a good size library of designs. While the other two were sold, "99 Steps" remains in my personal collection.
