Textile Origin Story:

Back in 2021 I took a trip to San Francisco for work and also a fun visit with my younger brother. We were walking in and out of different stores in the Castro when I saw this one kind of  crazy shop that had some art supplies. I bought a small sketch book that I could travel with and draw. It's been everywhere with me since and I think I have ten small graphite works done. In October of 2021 we traveled to New York City to see two Robert Longo shows. While on that trip we also spent an afternoon at the Museum of Natural History which inspired me to do this piece. I finished one drawing and then started on this one on the trip out to Guild Hall in the Hamptons for the second Longo show. We were traveling on the Jitney and it was pretty easy to draw. It is a completely made up fossil. The piece has its roots in work I was doing in the early 2000s. Every show I did at that time included some pieces with fossilized creatures. This piece is named Natural History and it took forever! I ended up going back to it much later with a soft lead to get some darker areas to improve the contrast.
