Textile Origin Story:

In the early 2000s my husband and I had the great opportunity to travel with members of the World Wildlife Fund on a live aboard through the Galapagos Islands. As the wildlife in Galapagos is protected from human predators, many bird species have no fear of people making them very easy to capture in photos. I came back from that trip thinking I was a truly gifted photographer right up until I tried to take a photo of a bird back home! Nonetheless, I had fantastic reference photos that continue to give in the form of fine art and mural work. Even within the last few years I have gone back to those photos to create the raw umber and snow white feathers of the Nazca Booby bird in a pair of commissioned paintings. These same feathers have also appeared in many drawings over the last twenty years. The patterns Kate and Jillian are both cut from a painting I did of a bird for a show called Confluence. The piece was of a very much glamorized version of the Nazca Booby bird. It had a significantly longer swan like neck and exceptional tail feather plumage, almost peacock in length! I couldn't help but name the painting "She's Had Work Done." The painting was sold to the wife of a board member of the WWF. Years later, I designed custom textiles for her from a sample of the tail feathers for a set of sheers. The very first textile I did for leggings for the Studio2eleven Textile Company was also created from this sample. The two pieces called "Primo" represent the first piece designed for Studio2eleven and the first piece designed for Defiance, both are from this painting. The Jillian and Kate files are archive pieces. I recently went back and added a vintage two toned transparent gold stripe to a newly redesigned file. This became the Kate Tux textile; I used it here on the sleeves.
